Next in my series highlighting widely distributed wines is a bottle we were gifted. The iconic Paso Robles Cab J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon 2022. It is the quintessential example of how mass-produced California Cabs are blended to achieve a consistent taste profile every year. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petite Sirah , 5%Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cab Franc. A Wine Enthusiast 90 pt “Best Buy” January 2025. Vanilla notes from oak barrel aging with big juicy red fruit flavors and soft tannins. It’s a solid choice when selecting a Cab for dinner guests because pairing it with grilled or roasted red meat, think steak and lamb, or even pasta with a hearty red sauce is sure to please.

Not that I know of. The Red Barn Winery in Delmont uses Paso Robles grapes to make their Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Mourvèdre. I have found the Cab made in Western Pennsylvania tend to be made in a style specific to this area. J. Lohr has economy of scale so no local boutique winery or any small operation can compete with them on price.

Paso Robles is my favorite grape growing region and wine destination. Red Barn Winery has personal relationships with growers in the Paso Robles region and we make wines from grapes carefully grown on a vineyard owned by a Pittsburgh native. J Lohr and their Cabernet Sauvignons have been a long time standard in Paso Robles. The “Godfather” of Cabernet Sauvignon in Paso Robles is credited to another Pittsburgh native and Penn State football player, Gary Eberle. Gary still sits outside his Eberle Winery with a bottle of his Cab and mixes it up with his guests. If you ever have the chance to visit Paso Robles, make sure you do.
